During the First World War, Pilsudski fought as a soldier and politician for the re-establishment of an independent Polish state. After 1918, he became Poland’s authoritarian head of state.
For the non-German and non-Magyar peoples the incipient disintegration of the Monarchy opened up new prospects for the future.
