Alfred Zoff: The town of Gorizia today, illustration

The town of Gorizia was the capital of the county of the same name, and represents a textbook example of the ethnic variety in the Habsburg Empire: it was called Gorizia by the Italians, Gorica by the Slovenes, Gurize by the Friulani and Görz by German-speakers. Today, the border between Italy and Slovenia runs through the town of Gorizia.
