Paul Schinnerer

During the First World War retired Major General Paul Schinnerer was at first commanding officer of the Imperial-Royal Rifle Regiment No. 26; among the battles he was involved in were the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth of Isonzo. In spring 1918, the Viennese officer was given command over the Imperial-Royal Rifle Brigade No. 26, with whom he fought at the Second Battle of the Piave in June of the same year. In the course of fighting Paul Schinnerer was gravely wounded through a grenade explosion and the collapse this caused to his dugout – an experience that he describes in his memoirs as life-threatening, yet one which he accepted, in his own words, without “the slightest fear or excitement”.
