Walter Friedrich

Walter Friedrich, first lieutenant in the Imperial-Royal Kaiserjägern (Alpine Corps) was taken prisoner in Galicia by the Russian Army in September 1914 – thus only a few weeks after the outbreak of the war. During this time until his return in 1921 Friedrich, who was from Schönlinde (today Krásná Lípa/Czech Republic), wrote several diaries in which he describes his everyday life as a prisoner of war, the worry of his relatives at home, and the repeated desire to escape. But Walter Friedrich’s notes also describe short moments of distraction, for instance the organisation of a Christmas party in December 1914.
