Fiction and reality in films

The imperial crown was at the head of a hierarchical order. The power of the Habsburg dynasty reposed on God’s grace. The life and work of the imperial court was idealized and glorified as a result. Films helped to consolidate the Habsburg myth. On the other hand, there was little on film about the contrasts in society and between nations, and the religious diversity of the Habsburg Monarchy. Some contradictions can nevertheless be discerned: while the flourishing war industry was frequently represented, films showing the collection of scrap metal and melting of church bells revealed the evident shortage of resources. After the First World War films began to show a situation that had long been concealed by the media: hardship and poverty, hunger and disease, and the struggle to survive in post-war society.
