Excerpt from 43rd sketchbook by Maximilian Liebenwein

The Art Nouveau painter Maximilian Liebenwein produced a total of 54 sketchbooks during his military service in which he recorded his immediate impressions. The 43rd sketchbook was finished between 5 and 14 January 1918 in Michalice (today Poland) and contains several studies of Elenka, the daughter in the house where a war comrade of Maximilian Liebenwein’s was accommodated. The sketchbook also contains a love poem written by Maximilian Liebenwein on 16 January 1918, an expression of the feelings Maximilian had for the young woman.
