Stephan I of the dynasty of the Árpáds was the first Christian ruler of Hungary. His coronation in the year 1000 is regarded as the date on which Hungary joined the Christian countries of Europe. St Stephan (Hungarian: Szent István) was an important symbol of integration in the history of Hungary and is still today Hungary's patron saint.
