H. Weber: “The peasant costumes: Valachs, Hungarians, Slavs, Germans”, colour lithograph from: Gabriel von Prónay: Skizzen aus dem Volksleben in Ungarn (Pest 1855)
The peaceful coexistence of the various ethnic groups in Hungary, propagated in support of Hungarianism, was soon replaced by a bitter struggle between the national groups. From left to right we see: a Valach (= Rumanian) peasant couple, a couple in Hungarian-Magyar costume, a Slav (in this case Slovak) and a Hungarian German couple.
